On May 18 we had a career day when 9th and 10th graders go and shadow someone who is in the career path they would want to take for one day. For this year's career day, I went to shadow a veterinarian Dr. Rei Tanaka at Santa Fe Animal clinic. in Encinitas. Dr. Tanaka and his team were really kind and explained a lot of things to me and Mattia in detail, We asked what a typical work day was and he said that they usually don't have typical work days because animals would come in go, sometimes it would only be a few animals but the work would be hectic or there would be a lot of animals but the day would be mellow or sometimes the other way around. Well even though his team isn't really in the title of doctors like dr tanka they share most of the work, today when we went all of the nurses were drawing blood out and doing the same paperwork and then dr Tanaka would just revise over it to double check. They also go in to see the patient while he is with another patient. They all do examinations, they basically share almost all of the labor work the only thing is that Dr. Tanaka is the one who does the surgeries and is also the one who does the diagnosis. There was this one patient who had a tumor in one of his front paws and Dr. Tanaka explained how there are different types of tumors and how they affect the body etc. all of this I was hoping to learn more about in biology class, I meant it was really interesting and I want to know more about the different types of diseases there are and how they can harm the animals. Dr. Tanaka said that he had to go to school for 6 years in this animal science field but seen talk more about his credentials. Honestly, I got to see a little kitten getting fixed and I also saw how many parts there is to a procedure, and how time-consuming it is but I still loved it all and would like to shadow another veterinarian again. The only this that I would do probably look for people sooner instead of the week off because maybe id has gotten my first choice instead of second even though I had a blast and was able to learn more things.
